For supermarkets, Morrisons and Tesco both have stores in Kingsbridge and there is a Co-Op in Modbury. Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Modbury all have independent retailers as well as the odd high street chain and are fun places to explore. For supplies, Aveton Gifford and Churchstow both have Post Offices with Village Stores, all under one roof.
There are numerous places to eat locally in pubs, cafés and restaurants. Everything from steak to vegetarian delicacies are available in a huge range of venues. You can also find delicious food at the Avon Mill Garden Centre, Loddiswell, the Valley View Café at the Aune Valley Farm Shop, and, thoroughly recommended by us, The Old Bakery in Kingsbridge, for tapas style food and the Oyster Shack near Bigbury for wonderful seafood. There are also Take Aways providing Indian, Chinese, Pizza and Fish and Chips from Kingsbridge.
Pubs abound - from the Fisherman’s Rest in Aveton Gifford (which welcomes children, dogs and muddy wellies), the Churchhouse Inn at Churchstow, which serves an excellent carvery on certain days, the Sloop at Bantham, and the Village Inn in Thurlestone village.
Kingsbridge has its own Cinema in the old Town Hall which shows up to date releases on its three screens and there are several excellent theatres in Plymouth, including the Theatre Royal and their small auditorium The Drum, and the Northcott Theatre in Exeter.
Plymouth also has the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth Pavillions which shows all sorts of events, museums and art galleries, and a range of cinemas. There is a modern shopping mall called Drake’s Circus with a huge variety of national chains.
There is a lovely “rec” for small children in Aveton Gifford behind the Village Hall, and two in Kingsbridge: Duncombe Park, off Duncombe Street, and in the Recreation Park on Embankment Road. All have swings, climbing frames, seesaws, sand and other things for the little ones to enjoy. Parking is nearby for all these parks.
